Thorogood, the American Heritage brand, has a rich history dating back to 1892 when Albert H. Weinbrenner, at the age of 27, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his partner, Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. Over the decades, the company has evolved, marking key milestones such as the formation of the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. in 1900, the printing of the first catalog in 1916, and the introduction of the "Job-fitted" concept in 1917. During World War I, Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army.
In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, a move that would become a defining aspect of the Thorogood brand. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1942, converting its entire production to military footwear for the duration of World War II, including combat and dress styles that also became popular with civilians.
The company's relationship with its workers has been outstanding, with the organization of the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union in 1943. This cooperative spirit has endured to the present day. In 1964, Thorogood introduced the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, which became the company's best-selling boot of all time and is still available in its original design.
In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner celebrated its centennial in 1992 with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."
In 2000, Thorogood employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Thorogood donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, with an additional 200 pairs following shortly after.
The company's commitment to quality and innovation continues today. In 2014, the "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced, built on the iconic No. 60 last. Thorogood celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, demonstrating a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs.
In 2022, Thorogood celebrated 130 years as a company, with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of the first western wear product, the Thorogood Square Toe Wellingtons. As sales continue to increase and the brand gains popularity, Thorogood is expanding its product offerings with many new styles on the horizon.
Thorogood's commitment to safety and quality is evident in the features of their work boots. All boots with a safety toe, whether steel or composite, meet or exceed the industry's falling impact and compression testing standards. Additionally, Thorogood's work boots are designed to be electrically hazard-resistant, slip-resistant, and oil-resistant, ensuring superior protection and performance for workers in hazardous environments.
