Weinbrenner: A Legacy of Quality and Innovation
The Weinbrenner brand has a rich history that spans over 130 years, marked by a relentless commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and meeting the needs of workers across various industries.
In 1892, at the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, partnering with Joseph Peffer to serve the "jobbing" trade. By 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formally established, and in 1916, the company printed its first catalog, boasting more leather-cutting machines than any other in the United States.
The company's pioneering spirit continued to shine through the decades. In 1917, Weinbrenner introduced the "job-fitted" concept and became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, and during World War II, it converted its entire operation to manufacturing combat and dress-style military footwear, which also gained popularity with civilians.
In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, yet the management and workers maintained an outstanding relationship that continues to this day. The company's most iconic product, the Hike n' Camp boot, was introduced in 1964 and became its best-selling boot of all time.
Weinbrenner's commitment to innovation and quality remained steadfast. In 1988, the company created its "ThoroGard" division, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 2000, the Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan), and in 2014, the "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced.
Throughout its history, Weinbrenner has demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility. In 2001, shortly after the September 11 attacks, the company donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, with an additional 200 pairs following soon after.
Today, Weinbrenner celebrates its 130th anniversary, showcasing its renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems. In 2022, the company opened a new factory in Merrill, WI, and launched its first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons.
Weinbrenner's legacy is one of enduring quality, innovation, and a deep understanding of the needs of workers. As the company continues to evolve, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide specialized, job-fitted boots that help its customers perform their specialized tasks with confidence and comfort.
