Weinbrenner Shoe Company: A Century-Old Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation
In 1892, at the young age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his partner Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. This marked the beginning of the Weinbrenner Shoe Company's journey, which has spanned over 130 years.
Over the decades, the company has achieved numerous milestones. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formally established. The first company catalog was printed in 1916, and by then, the company had more leather cutting machines than any other in the United States. The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.
In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, and in 1942, it celebrated its 50th anniversary by converting its entire operation to military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing combat and dress styles. This military footwear also became popular with civilians.
The company's relationship with its workers has been outstanding, with the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union organizing the company's workers in 1943. This strong partnership continues to this day.
In 1964, the company introduced the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, the Official Boy Scout Boot, which became its best-selling boot of all time and is still available in its original design.
Weinbrenner was purchased by a local group, including six employees, in 1988, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 2000, the company's employees took ownership through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan).
Weinbrenner's commitment to its community and country has been exemplified through its actions. In 2001, within three days of the September 11 attacks, the company donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, followed by an additional 200 pairs.
Today, Weinbrenner continues to evolve, introducing the "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots in 2014 and celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2017. In 2022, the company marked its 130th year by opening a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and launching its first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons.
Thorogood, Weinbrenner's flagship brand, remains focused on craftsmanship, innovation, and comfort, offering job-fitted boots for a wide range of professions. As the company looks towards the future, it remains committed to upgrading its domestic facilities, machines, and manufacturing methods, ensuring that its legacy of quality and innovation continues to thrive.
