Thorogood's heritage dates back to 1892 when 27-year-old Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with partner Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. Over the decades, the company has evolved, becoming a major contributor of boots to the US Army during World War I, introducing the iconic "Job-fitted" concept, and venturing into safety footwear production in the 1930s.

In 1964, the company introduced the Official Boy Scout Boot: The Hike n' Camp, with a wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching, which became the company's best-selling boot of all time and is still available today in its original design.

The company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, in 1988, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" division featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP.

Thorogood continued to innovate, introducing the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots in 2014, and celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2017 with a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, manufacturing methods, and computer systems.

Today, Thorogood celebrates 130 years as a company, with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, WI, and the launch of its first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to increase as the brand gains popularity and expands its product offerings.
