Weinbrenner's Legacy: A Century and a Half of Craftsmanship
In 1892, at the young age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in partnership with Joseph Peffer, catering to the "Jobbing" trades. This modest beginning would mark the start of a remarkable journey that has spanned over 130 years.
The year 1900 saw the formation of the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co., and in 1916, the company printed its first catalog, boasting more leather-cutting machines than any other in the United States. The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.
The company's foray into safety footwear production began in 1938, and in 1942, Weinbrenner celebrated its 50th year in business, converting its entire operation to military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing both combat and dress styles. Interestingly, this military footwear also gained popularity among civilians.
In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, yet the management and workers maintained an outstanding relationship that continues to this day. The iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, featuring a wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching, was introduced in 1964 and became the company's best-selling boot of all time, still available in its original design.
A significant milestone was reached in 1988 when the company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, showcasing high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner celebrated its centennial in 1992, proudly proclaiming "A Century of Lasting Quality."
In the early 2000s, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP, and just days after the September 11 attacks, the company donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, followed by an additional 200 pairs. The "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced in 2014, built on the iconic No. 60 last.
As Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, the company demonstrated a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs. This dedication to innovation and quality has continued, with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons, in 2022.
Today, as Weinbrenner celebrates its 130th year in business, the company's sales continue to increase as the Thorogood brand gains popularity, with many new styles on the horizon. This enduring legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, and community engagement is a testament to the vision and resilience that has defined Weinbrenner for over a century and a half.
