The Thorogood brand has a rich history dating back to 1892, when 27-year-old Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his partner Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. The company, later named the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co., printed its first catalog in 1916 and became known for having more leather-cutting machines than any other in the United States. In 1917, the company introduced the "Job-fitted" concept and was a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.
Thorogood's commitment to safety footwear production began in 1938, and the company celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1942 by converting to all-military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing combat and dress styles that also became popular with civilians. In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, and management and workers have maintained an outstanding relationship through today.
One of Thorogood's most iconic products, the Hike n' Camp boot with its wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching, was introduced in 1964 and became the company's best-selling boot of all time, still available in its original design today. In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear.
In 2000, Thorogood employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP, and in 2001, the company donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero within three days of the September 11 terror attacks, with another 200 pairs following. The 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced in 2014, and in 2017, Thorogood celebrated its 125th anniversary with a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs.
Today, Thorogood celebrates 130 years as a company, with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to increase as the brand gains popularity and expands with many new styles on the horizon.
Thorogood's work boots are designed with the safety and comfort of the wearer in mind. The boots feature a MAXWEAR 90™ TRACTION OUTSOLE WITH HEEL that flexes better than other work boot outsoles, absorbing impacts and protecting the feet and ankles while working on difficult surfaces. The boots meet ASTM F3445-21 slip-resistance standards and ASTM F2413-18 safety toe and electrical hazard resistance standards. They also feature a removable Ultimate Shock Absorption Footbed on a Poron Comfort Cushion Insole, providing exceptional comfort for the wearer. The Goodyear Storm Welt Construction ensures superior wear resistance and moisture seal between the upper and midsole, making these work boots extremely dependable, long-lasting, and fully serviceable.
