Thorogood's legacy dates back to 1892 when 27-year-old Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with partner Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formed, and the first catalog was printed in 1916, showcasing the company's extensive leather cutting capabilities.

The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I. The company took its first steps into safety footwear production in 1938 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1942, converting to all-military footwear for the duration of World War II.

In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, maintaining an outstanding relationship with management to this day. The iconic Hike n' Camp boot, featuring a wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching, was introduced in 1964 and became the company's best-selling boot.

In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, focusing on high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP in 2000.

Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, Weinbrenner donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, with an additional 200 pairs following. The 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced in 2014, and the company celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, demonstrating a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities and operations.

Today, Thorogood continues to gain popularity, with sales increasing and the launch of new styles, including the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons, in 2022. The company celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2023, solidifying its position as a trusted American brand.
