Weinbrenner, a renowned footwear brand, boasts a rich history dating back to 1892 when Albert H. Weinbrenner, at the age of 27, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with his partner, Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trade. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was officially formed, and the company's first catalog was printed in 1916, showcasing its extensive collection of leather cutting machines, unmatched in the United States.
The year 1917 marked the introduction of the "Job-fitted" concept, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I. The company took its first steps into safety footwear production in 1938 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in business in 1942, during which time it converted to all-military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing both combat and dress styles. This military footwear also became popular with civilians.
In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, and management and workers have maintained an outstanding relationship to this day. The iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, the Official Boy Scout Boot, was introduced in 1964 and became the company's best-selling boot of all time, still available in its original design.
The company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, in 1988, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). During the aftermath of the September 11 attacks in 2001, Weinbrenner donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, followed by an additional 200 pairs.
The "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced in 2014, built on the iconic No. 60 last. Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, and in 2022, the company opened a new factory in Merrill, WI, while also launching its first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. As Thorogood's popularity continues to grow, with many new styles on the horizon, Weinbrenner's sales have been steadily increasing, solidifying its position as a leading player in the footwear industry.
