Weinbrenner Shoe Company, the manufacturer of Thorogood footwear, has a rich 130-year history. The company was founded in 1892 by Albert H. Weinbrenner, who opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with his partner, Joseph Peffer. Over the decades, Weinbrenner has continuously innovated and evolved, becoming a major supplier of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I and introducing the "Job-Fitted" concept in 1917.

In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, and in 1964, it introduced the iconic Hike n' Camp boot, which became the company's best-selling model and is still available today. Weinbrenner was purchased by a local group, including six employees, in 1988, and in 2000, the company's employees took ownership through an ESOP.
