Thorogood is a brand with a rich history dating back to 1892, when Albert H. Weinbrenner, at the age of 27, opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his partner, Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formed, and the company's journey began.
Over the years, Thorogood has evolved and expanded its offerings. In 1916, the company printed its first catalog and boasted more leather-cutting machines than any other in the United States. The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Thorogood became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.
In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, and in 1942, it celebrated 50 years in business by converting to all-military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing combat and dress styles. Military footwear also became popular with civilians during this time.
Thorogood's rich history continued, with the company's workers organizing under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union in 1943. The management and workers maintained an outstanding relationship through the years. In 1964, the company introduced the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, which became its best-selling boot of all time and is still available in its original design today.
In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1992, and in 2000, the employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan).
Thorogood has continued to innovate and expand its offerings. In 2014, the "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots was introduced, built on the iconic No. 60 last. In 2017, the company celebrated its 125th anniversary, demonstrating a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs.
Today, Thorogood celebrates 130 years as a company, with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of its first western wear product, the Thorogood Square Toe Wellingtons. The brand's popularity continues to grow, and it is expanding its product line with many new styles on the horizon.
Thorogood's products are known for their durability, comfort, and safety features. The boots are made with Crazyhorse full-grain leather, Vibram 1275 Olympia rubber outsoles, and removable Ultimate Shock Absorption footbeds, providing ultra-comfort while maintaining safety. The Nano safety toe is thinner than a traditional composite toe and lighter than a steel toe, offering protection without added weight. The boots are also waterproof, slip-resistant, and meet ASTM electrical hazard resistance safety standards.
